Bergen’s 5th Point Tournament – South Bay
A calm, cloudy day greeted 29 anglers for Bergen’s 5th Points Tournament held August 5, 2017 on Lake Champlain at South Bay. A little while later, monsoon rain hit the area for around 4-5 hours. Fortunately the rain let up for the last couple of hours and the weigh-in (and the ride home) was conducted in sunny weather. Although a major tournament was being held out of Ticonderoga, not may boats travelled down south to our area. Water temps hovered in the mid to upper seventies and the water clarity improved the farther up river you travelled (so I was told).

Dave Sabatino won his first Bergen Bassmaster tournament with a hefty LMB limit totaling 16.69. Fishing with Top Bergen angler John Ernest, Dave used Senkos rigged weedless in and around weedlines. Dave also tied with Greg Trass for the lunker of the day, a 4 lb. -15 oz. largemouth. Nice going Dave and wishing you continued success!

Coming in 2nd with 15.88 was Bergen Veteran Greg Trass. Greg did not pre-fish but fished with Bill Vella who did. Although the day started off slow with small bass and a missed lunker smallie, Greg eventually found some bigger LMB bass down south. He used a combination of ned rigs, Senkos and spinnerbaits and also had the co-lunker LMB at 4-15. If a few bass are caught on the Hudson and at Saratoga, looks like Greg has an excellent shot for the “Angler of the Year” award!

Rich Logan Sr
is having a good year and came in 3rd with 5 big mouths weighing in at 14-13. Rich had a limit by 8AM and had good success using small swim baits around rocks and drop offs. Right now, Rich and John Williams are close candidates for the Non-Boater Angler of the Year award.

Another check goes out to Mike Rinaldi who garnished 4th Place with a 13.25 bag of largemouth bass. Due to a boat break down, Mike fished with two non-boaters and is commended for his sportsmanship! Despite the competition, Mike used a drop shot to cull twice. Both of his riders, Brian Morgan and observer Andrew caught bass. Thank you Mike!

Mark Scocco
nailed a few bass early on white or pumpkin fat swim baits around rocks then culled a few later using heavy jigs flipping in the weedlines. For taking home the 5th Place pay-out, his largemouth limit weighed in at 13-13. Nice going Mark!

Kudos goes out to Tournament Director Mark Filippini. After our primary scale failed to properly operate, Mark pulled a spare out of his truck that we didn’t even know he had. It worked via pounds and ounces, but the stats were converted to the usual process. We have over a month to go before the Hudson at Ulster and the town requires that we submit $8 per boat for launching. Most likely, we will collect the money at our August meeting.                                                                                                                Nick Albano
