One Year Ends, we may need some clarity.

Hard to believe but the 2007 year is wrapping up and we've already had 3 motions to vote on for next year!  Of course, motions for rule changes can now only be heard from November through April.  Looking back on my first year in office, I have to consider that rule change one of the best things I was able to get accomplished this year.  That allowed the club to handle the business side of the club before fishing season but once we hit ice out, allowed us to focus on fishing and having a great time without all of the debating and opinions.

Although discussions were held openly for each motion, I cannot tell you how much guys are reflecting back on them with some bit of regret as to how they voted.  They were close votes and one vote would have made all the difference.  The vote to raise the dues required 2/3rd's majority but lost 13 to 7.  When that failed to pass, many felt obligated to do something to help save money and voted to eliminate the payouts for 4th and 5th places.  That motion only required a simple majority and did squeak by, again by 1 vote.  In the aftermath, I've heard from board members, guys who were not at the meeting, and some that were, all who want to overturn that vote.

So, in looking at this in hindsight, I think I needed to provide some clarity to the club membership.  Back in September, we reviewed the club finances and indicated to the membership that we are operating on a very slim margin.  We have been fortunate to receive contributions to assist in our operation from various sources which has been a huge help.  At that time, we indicated that the board was considering the raising of the dues in order to cover us going forward for any future increases in operating expenses.  We were not saying that we could not afford the status quo, only that with the status quo, we would have to be very cost conscious, especially when it comes to expensive Classics and an increase in cost of the awards dinner.

Now, as President, I must present all motions in an unbiased manner.  Of course, you all know how opinionated I can be and usually do not refrain from speaking my peace.  So, regarding the recent events, I do feel that the club reacted too hastily and too knee-jerk.  The membership felt it was up to them to through out motions to "save the club and it's treasury" rather than allowing the board to review and suggest areas to cut back if needed.  Of course it's within their right to do so but I personally think it was the wrong way to go.  The club is about opportunity and providing benefits to it's membership.  Why would we reduce the opportunity to "collect a check" in a tourney?  Placing in the top five is hard enough but cutting that back to the only the top 3 is a payback to less than 10% of the field.  In my opinion, there are better ways to cut costs that can be managed by the board exclusively on an as needed basis.  In "fat" years where we receive supplemental funding or win Chapter of the Year or the like, the added funds would not require any kind of cut backs.  In "lean" years, the board can  make decisions as to which unnecessary costs might be trimmed back. After all, that is part of our jobs.

So, hopefully, you'll look past my little rant as try to find some clarity as to the matters revolving around the operating expenses of the club.  I'm sure these motions are not entirely behind us as they will be hot topics at the upcoming board meeting and already are getting quite the bit of chatter.  Regardless, it's time to step away from these things for now and simply enjoy the holiday times with our families.  Best wishes to every member and his family for a happy holiday season!
