Steve "DOC" Rusert Squeaks out a Hot Win on Mahopac
With Scott Mitchell assisting with Mahopac parking
arrangements in advance, our 4th tournament of 2010 went off without
a hitch. Due to a rare 4AM to noon tournament schedule, the only difficulty was
dealing with a lack of sleep. Although the first few hours provided comfortable
air temps, mid 90 degree hot and sunny weather made it tough. Fortunately the 83
degree water temps did not hinder the bass population. It was amazing how many
smallies were caught in relatively shallow water. Prepared to drop shot at 35 to
45 feet, I was surprised to see that active smallies were cruising in the 8 to
15 foot range with periodic surface activity all day. Anglers discovering this
condition during pre-fishing were surely at an advantage. Most of the top five
finalists pre-fished within one week of the tournament.
One angler who chose not to pre-fish
was Steve Rusert who edged out John Hayden by one ounce! While
fishing in the dark, Steve nailed his first fish on a Jitterbug. He also boated
the tournament lunker, a 4-5 smallie. With excellent dock fishing skills, Steve
culled out his limit fishing docks and marinas. Steve’s final 1st
Place bag included 1 smallie and 4 largemouths and totaled 14-12, nice
going Steve!
John Hayden pre-fished and
developed a good game plan in focusing on feeding fish in one particular
northern area. Using spider grubs worked around rocks and boulders, he finished
in 2nd Place with four smallies and one largemouth totaling
14-11. Good Job!
Back in line to receive a check,
Mark Scocco only needed five good bites to bag a 3rd Place
limit totaling 13-9. Mark nailed three quick chunky smallies before dawn
on a spinnerbait. He then caught another on a Sammy. Later in the morning, Mark
nailed his 5th keeper on a crankbait. All of his bass were found off
rocky banks and ledges. During his pre-fishing trip, Mark learned that a good
morning bite would be the ticket.
John Ernest, who was winning
the tournament when he and Rob Curtis left the weigh-in early, settled
into 4th Place with a nice 12-15 bag. After catching a few
bass on the surface, his old school black power worms did the trick again. John
pre-fished once and his good showing helps solidify his overall 1st
Place standing.
Rounding out the Top Five, Kris
Lechman weighed in three smallies and two largemouth bass totaling
12-9, a nice bag. Using big jigs and spinnerbaits, Kris had a limit by
4:45AM but couldn’t cull until 11:30 when he fooled a big smallie on a spider
grub at 15 feet.
Next up are two night tournaments,
Bergen’s 10th Annual Open on Lake Hopatcong and
our 5th Points event on Candlewood. Members are
reminded that all local speed limits are to be followed and all safety
requirements, as learned during your Boater Safety class, must be adhered to. To
help facilitate the healthy release of all bass, adding ice to your livewell is
recommended. You only need to lower the water temp by 10 degrees. Too much ice
will kill your bass faster than hot water. Another precaution is to run your
recirculation pump on manual.
Johnny E battle’s the elements for another Big Win!
Whoever pre-fished the Hudson on Friday enjoyed a beautiful day with a glass flat Hudson and a great outgoing tide which produced some decent fish. Weather reports predicted a carbon copy for Sunday and everyone was geared up for a great day. Bergen never scheduled a NY Bass Season opener on the Hudson and this was to be a new experience for all. Unfortunately the 3rd tournament of 2010 turned into a case of surviving the trip back to Catskill by 2PM. A steady south wind kicked up the Hudson to frenzy and almost every boat, including the 20 footer’s, took on a wave or two over the bow. I lost my Humminbird GPS/Sonar and John Ernest had his windshield shattered giving him and his partner a couple of minor face cuts. The good news is that no one was seriously hurt and all boats made it back by 2PM.
And speaking of John Ernest, he nailed his second win in as many tournaments. Unlike every other angler (except one), Johnny was able to locate active fish at one particular suck hole. During the outgoing tide, Johnny used old school techniques (a black power worm) to cull out his winning weight of 12-2. Nice going John, you have a great shot at becoming the first Bergen member to garnish a 3rd Angler of the Year trophy!
Our other Hudson suck hole expert, Doug Giachino fishing from his new Ranger enjoyed a 2nd place limit totaling 9-8. While in the zone for 15 minutes, Doug caught 7 keepers. Given the extraordinary bad conditions with no pre-fishing and given the fact that a few perennial Hudson veterans caught one or no fish, his results were outstanding. Let me add that John and Doug fished different suck holes.
Club veteran Andy Karcich nailed down 3rd Place with 3 chunky bass weighing in at 8-13. Andy pre-fished once and like everyone else, had a hard time in locating fish. He managed to catch his bass on frogs.
Fourth Place goes to our tournament committee chairman, Jason Mordhorst, who also weighed in 3 bass that totaled 6-14. Jason seriously pre-fished and caught two on a spook and one on a senko. We also thank Jason for another well run tournament and understand that he lining up special parking arrangements for Mahopac. Thank you J!
Tied for 5th place with 6-11 each are Scott Mitchell and Bob Murphy. Scotty nailed his fish on crankbaits while Bobby utilized popper frogs and spider grubs. Nice going guys! Lunker goes out to our lucky Yankee raffle winner, Kirk Stober who also lucked out with one big smallie going 4-4. Kirk nailed the big one on a falling tide with a popper frog worked at the edge of a water chestnut field.
Although next up is Mahopac Lake on July 17th, you die-hard Hudson Fans (like Doug Giachino) are reminded that a first ever NYTBF tournament will be held out of Catskill on July 11th. I hope to have a new GPS/Sonar combo by then and hope to fish this event. For Mahopac Lake, 4AM to noon July 17, Jason will review the parking arrangements during our July 15 Bergen meeting. Once again, congratulations to all the Bergen Anglers who braved a tough Hudson on June 19th.

The NINE POUND 2009 Lunker of the Year
largemouth caught by Bergen’s John Williams
has won the first place 2009
Photo Contest at Angler’s Select fishing lures. For his 1st Place finish, owner Jason Pelak sent John a huge assortment of plastic baits and Eco
Pro Tungsten weights. In addition, Jason sent Nick Albano a nice assortment of
Eco Pro Tungsten weights that will be distributed to the Bergen Bassmaster Six
Man Team fishing the NJBF Chapter Championship in late June. Since Vermont bans lead
weights, the Tungsten products will come in handy (THANK YOU JASON). Please check out the www.anglersselect.com website for their
excellent products including Eco Pro Tungsten weights. There is a $2.99 flat
rate shipping charge and the special weights are $3.50 per
pack.
A Billy Bass Bustin’ Candlewood Opener
A light rain with no wind looked like the ideal fishing day on
Candlewood for the Bergen Bassmasters 1st tournament of 2010. And for a
sizable number of members, it was just that. Anglers in the know of both hot
spots and hot lures scored with nice numbers of largemouth and smallmouth bass.
The wind didn’t pick up until after 1PM and the Bergen tournament was the only
event on the big lake. As recent chilly weather and water temps as low as 51
degrees temporarily turned off the spawn, the best catches were made in 8 to 12
feet of water.
Pre-fishing twice and last year’s Top Six finalist, Bill
Vella boated over 30 keepers and culled up to 3 smallies and 2 largemouth
totaling 15-9. Off to a great start in 2010, Billy used his own custom made
Bass Bustin’ jig heads rigged with swim baits. Billy pre-fished twice and
was paired with all-time Lunker Champion John Williams. John also had a
good day and we congratulate both gentlemen for a great season opener!
Veteran tournament angler, Lance Cahoon, fresh off the
Brian Kerchal Candlewood event culled around 12 keepers and weighed in 2
smallies and 3 largemouth bass for 14-4 and 2nd Place. Lance worked 12 foot
contours with swim baits and spider grubs. Lance will be fishing with Scott
Mitchell in two upcoming Candlewood events, the Keitech USA Open and the CT
Outdoors two day tournament. Best wishes to you both!
Our Bergen Bassmaster Outing for the Disabled Co-Chairman,
Kris Lechman starts off the season in style with 1 largemouth and 4
smallies totaling 13-14. Kris pre-fished on two occasions and like many other
successful anglers; he used spider grubs to cull out a nice limit. Nice going
Kris!
Bergen veteran non-boater, Eddie Schickman called his
wife from the weigh-in station to report that he weighed in 5 keepers at 13-12
for 4th Place and nailed the lunker of the day, a 4-10 largemouth. Eddie
pre-fished with his good buddy, Pat Van Wettering and caught all of his
fish on swimbaits. Eddie fished the tournament from the back of Terry
Eckels big Ranger. Not to be denied a paycheck; Terry himself took home 5th
place with a 3 largies and 2 smallies totaling 12-3. This was indeed a good day
for both guys and we congratulate you for an excellent day!
Jason Mordhorst, the Tournament Committee and all Bergen
Bassmasters deserve credit for a safely run tournament. Special thanks go out to
Jason who was busy shuffling the pairings right up until the day before the
tournament. Due to various valid reasons, Bergen was short 3 or 4 boats. For
this reason, Honorable Mention goes out to a non-member who was not even
present. Scotty’s good buddy and Bergen’s friend, Dan Murphy loaned
Scotty his new Skeeter for the tournament, and deserves a Special Thanks. Danny,
your generosity is well appreciated by all of us! You’re the man and we hope to
see you at our Bergen Open Night Tournament on July 31st.
Next stop - Lillinonah on May 15th - no doubt the same tactics
that worked on Candy, may work at Lilly.

What do Submarines, Hot Dogs and Bassmasters have in common?
Special Thanks are in order for Bob Murphy, the President of the Bergen Bassmasters (NJBF-TBF). This past Wednesday, Bob Captained a team of USO volunteers who were on hand to great returning sailors from the nuclear powered attack submarine USS Virginia, assigned to the Groton CT Submarine Base.
Bob took a day off from work at Ramsey Outdoors (NJ), drove a USO van and equipment from NYC to Groton and met up with two more USO volunteers. After pre-approved admittance to the highly secure docking area, Bob, Chris and Matt servied hot dogs and beverages to the sailors and their family members.
The USO commonly assists with such welcome home celebrations (and deployments) and this is just one of many activities which support our troopers. Bob Murphy is also a decorated Vietnam War Veteran and will be on hand for the 2nd Open Tournament to benefit the troops c/o the USO - August 29, 2010 on Lake Champlain at Plattsburgh, NY (managed by the Plattsburgh Bass Club).
Bob was allowed to take a few photographs and we hope to post them soon.

Although I have been fishing for dozens of years, I started tournament fishing in earnest when I joined Bergen in 1989. On May 20, 1989 I was lucky enough to be drawn with a fishing dynamo named Bob Puente. I knew nothing about Twin Lakes CT and relied on Bob to provide me with some tournament tips. Bob was cool and was quick to learn that due to a cold front, the main lake bass were not very active. On a sunny day, he was the only angler to discover that a tiny pond between both lakes held active bass, sunning themselves in slightly warmer and shallow water. Using grubs and plastic worms, he picked up a decent limit of bass and easily won the tournament with over 11 pounds. From that day I learned that no matter how tough the fishing is, there is always something that will work, and someone will unlock the key. Bob was quick to help out other anglers and right from my start with Bergen, I credit him with teaching me two key tactics, don’t waste time with non-productive water and try to do what no one else is doing. I am sure that many Bergenites received a few bassin’ tips, boat/motor assistance or moral support from Bob and we will miss him dearly, may he rest in peace.
